On the afternoon of May 12th, 2023, from 4pm to 7:30pm, the Chinese Language Teachers' Association of South Australia organized the termly EduStream Online Professional Development (PD) activity for the second term of the year. A total of 162 teachers from South Australia, Western Australia, Northern Territory, Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai, the UK, the mainland of China, and Macau SAR participated in this online professional learning.

2023年5月12日下午4点至晚7:30,南澳中文教师协会理事会组织了本年度第二学期的常规在线专业培训活动:EduStream Online PD。来自南澳州、西澳州、北领地、维多利亚州、新南威尔士州、昆士兰州和塔斯马尼亚州,以及新加坡、马来西亚、迪拜、英国、中国内地和澳门特别行政区等地的162名教师参加了此次在线培训。

 

During this PD, we were fortunate to have renowned international education experts Ms. Yu Huiling and Ms. Jessy Tu share their decades of innovative teaching experience and ideas, as well as valuable teaching resources and materials. Their lectures, which they volunteered to prepare for us despite their busy schedules, were enlightening and of great benefit to us. Both of them are highly respected by all teachers, not only for their professionalism, but also for their ethical values as educators. After the lectures, over 100 teachers who attended left heartfelt messages to express their sincere gratitude.

此次教研培训,我们有幸邀请到国际知名教育专家禹慧灵老师和Jessy Tu老师与我们分享他们几十年来不断创新的教学经验与理念,以及珍贵的教学资源和资料。两位老师在百忙之中义务为我们准备了精彩的讲座,让我们受益匪浅。无论是从专业角度还是从教师的职业道德和价值观的角度,两位老师都是值得我们所有教师敬佩的,也是我们学习的榜样。讲座结束后,一百多位参加讲座的老师纷纷留言致以最诚挚的谢意,表达了对两位老师的敬仰和感激之情。

 

Mrs Shelby Baker, a teacher of Chinese from St. Peter's College in SA, also shared with us the teaching methods and self-made materials she uses in her daily teaching, such as AIM and TPRS. As a young teacher, Mrs Shelby Baker has been able to build her own resource library in just a few years and apply what she learns from each professional learning session to classroom practice. This is something that all teachers and preservice teachers can learn from.

当晚,圣彼得男校的邓雯老师也与大家分享了她在日常教学中运用的教学法和自制资料,例如AIM、TPRS等教学法。作为一位年轻教师,邓雯老师能在短短的几年中建立起自己的资源库,并将每一次培训中所学的教育理念和教学方法用于课堂实践,这是值得我们所有教师和大学实习生学习借鉴的。

As for the current situation of Chinese language education in South Australia, we teachers are still caught between traditional education and the transformation to AI era education. If we want to truly improve the quality of Chinese language teaching in South Australia and gain recognition from Chinese language learners, we face a long and difficult challenge. Besides continuously improving our knowledge and skills, we also need to break out of our comfort zone, step out of the classroom, collaborate with others, and broaden our horizons.

就南澳州中文教育现状而言,我们这些教师尚处于传统教育与智能时代教育变革之间。若想真正提升南澳州的中文教学质量并获得中文学习者的认可,我们教师任重而道远。除了不断提升自身的知识和技能外,我们还需要打破固步自封的状态,走出课堂、开阔视野,并协同合作。

 

We look forward to more teachers actively participating in local, state, and international Chinese language teaching and research activities, and working together to promote the prosperity of Chinese language education in South Australia.

Mr. Huiling Yu (禹慧灵

 

IBDP Chinese learning and teaching approaches and the curriculum implementation that enhance student performance and learning outcomes.

《浅说IBDP学习方法、课程构架和学习过程》

Huiling Yu is an IB educator who has been involved extensively in IB curriculum design, learning and teaching, assessment, teacher professional development, and IB school authorisation. Huiling has a background of teaching Chinese language in international schools in Australia and Hong Kong, and is currently working on Chinese curriculum development in international and local context. Huiling is the learning and teaching adviser in English Schools Foundation, Hong Kong. The book "Chinese A Language and Literature Course Study Guide" written by Mr Huiling Yu is a valuable textbook and guide for IBDP Chinese teachers.

禹慧灵老师是一名资深IB教育工作者,广泛参与 IB 课程设计、教学、评估、教师专业培训发展以及对于 IB 学校评估授权等专业活动。禹老师具有在澳大利亚和香港的国际学校等教授中文的经验,目前致力于国际和本地背景下的中文课程开发;也是香港英基学校的教学顾问。其所著《IBDP中文A语言与文学课程学习指导》是IBDP中文老师的珍贵指导教材与资料。

Effective classroom management goes beyond just the teacher's management skills, as it is crucial for classroom activities to enhance students' motivation and learning outcomes. Students should find the class interesting and meaningful. Teaching methods and assessments should be closely linked, and formative assessments should consider the differences in students' backgrounds, abilities, and interests. Scaffolding activities for weaker students and extension activities for stronger students can enable differentiated teaching.
成功的课堂管理不只是老师的管理技巧,更重要的是课堂的活动能够有效提升学生的学习动机与效果。学生必须觉得老师上课是有趣的,学习是有意义的。老师的教学法与评估是紧密结合的,老师进行形成性评估时如果能考虑到班级里各种不同背景、能力、兴趣的学生的差异性,配合对程度较弱的学生做的鹰架与对能力较强的学生做的延展活动设计,就能做到分层教学设计。跟着涂老师现场实际操作,感受学生的学习体验,一定能有效改变您的教学!

Ms. Jessy Tu is an experienced Chinese teacher in international schools who has taught in Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand. She is the author of "Jessy Teacher's Chinese Reading Series," and "Chinese as a Second/ Additional Language Teaching Station Vol.1 & 2," as well as contributing to the textbook "Amazing Chinese." Ms. Tu established and writes for the WeChat public account "Jessy Teacher's Station" and has been invited to lead workshops for an extended period.

Practical teaching methods must be combined with our own teaching environment and adapted to local conditions. This lecture will introduce in stages how the teacher integrates AIM into teaching the Chinese picture book "Dumpling & Tangyuan" to help second-language and near-native language learners maximize the learning effect of Chinese listening, speaking, reading and writing. The presenter will also share some learning and practical experience about TPRS.

实用的教学方法要融合到自己的教学环境里才算是因地制宜。本讲座将分阶段的介绍老师是如何在中文绘本《饺子和汤圆》的教学中融合了AIM,尽可能的兼顾了二语和近母语学生在听,说,读,写四个方面的训练。邓老师还会分享一些关于TPRS的学习和实践心得。
