2025 South Australia Chinese Language Video Competition

RATIONALE

The 2025 Chinese Language Video Competition invites students to showcase their Chinese language skills and imaginative talents by creating a short video in Chinese.

This competition encourages participants to explore and share their understanding of Chinese language and culture, whether through speech, music, performance, cuisine, visual arts, or other creative expressions. All students currently learning Chinese are welcome to participate, no matter their level of proficiency.

THEME AND TOPIC

For the 2025 competition, students have the freedom to choose their own topics and themes, offering a unique opportunity to showcase their creativity while making meaningful connections to the Chinese language skills they’ve developed.

We invite students to explore any format or genre that inspires them, be it a music video, comedy sketch, dramatic scene, role-play, documentary, animation, or even claymation. The only requirements are the use of Chinese language. So go ahead, think outside the box, and create something original that you're excited to share!

CATEGORIES

The competition has three categories, each assessed separately based on the following criteria:

  • Category One: Chinese Second Language Learner

For non-native learners studying Chinese as a second language.

  • Category Two: Background Language Learner

For students who may speak Mandarin at home or have some background knowledge in the language but are not necessarily

       native speakers.

  • Category Three: First Language Learners of Chinese

For native Chinese language learners who have officially completed Year One of primary school in a Mandarin-speaking country or        region.

GROUPS

  • Junior Primary Group: Reception to Year 2

  • Upper Primary Group: Year 3 to Year 6

  • Middle Group: Year 7 to Year 9

  • Senior Group: Year 10 to Year 12

ELIGIBILITY

Students who are learning the Chinese language in South Australian public, independent, Catholic schools, or officially registered community schools are eligible to enter.

SCHOOL ENTRY FEE

$15 per video entry (student of CLTASA member teachers);

$25 per video entry (Individual student registration or student of non-CLTASA member teachers)

ORIGINALITY REQUIREMENT

  • All entries must be original works independently created and made by the student.

  • Submissions must not be previously entered in, or adapted from, any other competition.

  • The content should genuinely reflect the student’s language proficiency, creative thinking, and/or basic technical skills.

  • Whether the entry takes the form of poetry recitation, speech, song, role-play, or other types of performance, it should clearly demonstrate the student’s ability to use and apply the Chinese language.

We understand that younger students in lower or middle primary years, especially those learning Chinese as a second language, may require some assistance from parents or teachers in filming, editing, or limited script support due to age, language, or technical limitations. However, from the upper primary levels onward, students are expected to take primary responsibility for concept development, Chinese language expression, and video production. Specific expectations will be guided by the official judging criteria.

Please understand that this competition is designed to showcase the student’s personal learning progress and individual achievement, not to compare the technical skills or language proficiency of adults. We strongly encourage all participants to be actively involved in all aspects of the creative process, including script writing, Chinese narration, performance planning, and video recording. Even a simple video, if genuinely created by the student, can most effectively reflect their effort, originality, and growth in learning Chinese.

VIDEO FORMAT

  • The video should feature dialogue or narration in Chinese, spoken by the students participating in the competition.

  • The required length varies by age group: 1.5 to 3 minutes for junior students, and 1.5 to 5 minutes for middle and senior students.

  • Each entry must include a cover page specifying the school name, group, category, and student names, as well as the video title.

  • Entries must be submitted in MP4 or MOV format and meet technical requirements for resolution and sound quality.

  • Entries should be appropriate for all ages and must not contain explicit or offensive material.

CONTESTANTS

Students may participate in the competition either individually or in a group, with a maximum of three students per group in the same category. If extra members are needed for filming purposes, a fee of $10 per person will be charged for each additional participant. It is essential that every student plays a meaningful role in the production process.

Please note that group submissions must consist of students from the same language category and year level group. For example, a First Language student may not collaborate with a Background Language or Second Language learner. If students from different language categories collaborate, the entry will automatically be classified under the highest language proficiency group involved (e.g., as a First Language entry). Similarly, if students from different year levels work together (e.g., Year 2 and Year 3), the entry will be placed in the older age group category (e.g., Year 3–4 group).

Community Schools can only compete with other Community Schools.

Furthermore, it's important to note that students cannot be nominated twice. For instance, if a student is nominated in a community school, they cannot be nominated in a mainstream school as well.

VIDEO UPLOADING AND SHARING

Any link from Google Drive, OneDrive, a private YouTube link, or other online platforms can be used for uploading videos, as long as the link can be shared with the CLTASA committee to DOWNLOAD the videos.

VIDEO SUBMISSION

The deadline for video submission is Friday 22nd August (Week 5 Term 3). Please note that late submissions may not be considered.

For this competition, we encourage school teachers to register and provide information for all students from their respective schools in a unified manner.

However, if it is inconvenient for teachers to register students collectively, we encourage students and parents to register on their own (if the student is a minor, parents can fill out the registration form on their behalf). In the event of a conflict between the number of videos registered by self-registered students and the maximum number of videos allowed for teacher registration at your school, priority will be given to the teacher's registration.

To submit your entry, please register via TryBooking at: https://www.trybooking.com/DECUW

If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at:  info@cltasa.org

VIDEO SUBMISSION LIMIT

There is NO limit to the number of videos a school can submit. Schools are welcome to enter as many videos as they wish.
