2023 SA OZCHIN Quiz Bowl

Years 8-12

Chinese Background and Second Language Learners

About

On the evening of Friday 2 June, Seymour College successfully organised the 2023 SA OZCHIN Quiz Bowl, a Chinese language and culture competition with the support of the Chinese Language Teachers Association of South Australia (CLTASA).

This professional competition was the first of its kind in South Australia, specially organised for Chinese Second Language and Background students in Years 8-12. A total of 92 students from eight SA schools registered for the competition. Seven schools participated in the evening onsite, and one country school participated online. 18 teachers from 12 schools were involved in the onsite supervision.

The concept for this Chinese language and culture quiz night originated from the “Seymour CHIQuiz,” a Chinese competition held by Seymour College in 2021 for 24 Year 8 Chinese language students. At that time, Andrew Scrimgeour, lecturer in Language Education and Asia Literacy in the Education Futures unit at the University of South Australia, was invited as one of the judges and delivered a speech to encourage Seymour students to make progress in their Chinese learning.

In 2023, the CLTASA adopted our suggestion and organised a Chinese language and knowledge competition for all Years 8 to 1 2 students in SA. At the beginning of the year, we renamed the traditional competition “Seymour CHIQuiz” to “SA OZCHIN Quiz Bowl.

(SA OZCHIN Quiz Bowl)

Competition format

This competition fully considered the teachers' suggestions from participating schools regarding grouping, examination content, and competition format. To ensure fairness, most of the participating school teachers volunteered to devise questions based on students' actual learning content and cultural understanding. These were divided into four different difˎculty levels to ensure fair competition for all. Before the competition, teachers from participating schools shared the competition handbook with the students, helping them prepare with targeted guidance.

The competition consisted of individual challenges, including Chinese knowledge written test and cultural knowledge quiz) and team challenges (comprehensive knowledge competition including word chain game, guessing vocabulary by watching videos, song identification activity with timed activities, and language and cultural knowledge peak challenge.

Thanks to Seymour College

At the beginning of the competition, Sally Penn, Director of Enrolments and Community Relations, took the stage to deliver a welcoming speech to all participating students and teachers; Sally also emphasised the importance of the language events and encouraged all students to think about that:

...there is a group ofpeople around you all supporting you to experience a different language, but also challenge your mind and challenge your thinking...

The strong support from the Seymour leadership and staff was the key to the event’s success. Seymour College's generous financial assistance ensured the smooth execution of the event, including providing a free venue and equipment, funding half of the cost for the exquisite buffet dinner, prizes and souvenirs for students and teachers, as well as photography services by the invited photographer from Festival City Photography. Over the past ten months, Seymour College's support for the activities of the CLTASA has been a solid pillar for the successful organization of various events. Furthermore, we would like to sincerely thank our Chinese teachers at Seymour College, Jin You, Andy Hu, Shiyi Li, and Jenny Liu, for their teamwork, dedication, and preparation leading up to the quiz night. Their collaborative spirit and efforts behind the scenes are highly appreciated.

We also thank the following Seymour International students who worked as MCs and helped with the organisation of the event. We hope that our students can enhance their organizational skills and develop a sense of teamwork through each activity, allowing them to grow through hands-on experiences.

Reflection
反思

This was our first time organizing a knowledge and culture quiz for all Chinese second and background language students in grades 8-12. Although it was a relatively new initiative, we gained valuable experience and insights throughout the process. Based on our reflection, we have identified several areas for improvement in the future, particularly in adapting to Australian school settings:

1) There were issues with the allocation of competition rooms. During the individual challenge, it would have been more organized to use separate classrooms for each of the four competition groups instead of conducting them all in the same hall, which caused confusion in distributing the exam papers.

2) It would be beneficial to use colored paper for the different level exam papers to make it easier for participating students and supervising teachers to distinguish them at a glance.

3) We acknowledge that some questions were too difficult. In designing the exam questions, teachers should consider the students' actual language proficiency and cultural understanding.

4) The volume of on-site marking was quite significant. To alleviate the pressure on teachers, we need to streamline the design of the written exam and simplify the marking process.

5) We need to improve our familiarity with online platforms such as Buzz and Kahoot to enhance their effectiveness and maximize their potential in future competitions.

6) We understand the inconvenience caused by the timing of the competition. Due to extracurricular activities, many students could only join the competition after 6 PM. Therefore, we had to adjust the official start time from 5:30 PM to 6 PM to accommodate everyone's schedules.

7) There were issues with communication and information dissemination. Some students did not provide their email addresses during registration, resulting in delayed notifications or failure to receive quiz booklet. This led to some students submitting blank exam papers or achieving lower scores. Additionally, the use of nicknames during online quizzes also presented challenges.

8) We need to be cautious with the terminology used in the competition. The term " Written Test" (written exam) raised concerns among some students, potentially adding unnecessary pressure and leading them to withdraw from the competition.

Through this reflection, we are committed to making improvements and enhancing future competitions to provide a better experience for all participants.
