Video Competition
Reception–Year 12
Showcases Chinese language skills through creative student videos.
About the Competition
The South Australian Chinese Language Video Competition is an annual initiative of the Chinese Language Teachers Association of South Australia (CLTASA). It gives students a creative platform to demonstrate their Chinese language learning and share their ideas through video.
Students are encouraged to combine Chinese with storytelling, performance, music, dance, food, visual arts, animation and digital production. The competition values authentic language use, imagination and personal growth. A technically simple video can be highly successful when it genuinely reflects the student’s own learning, effort and creativity.
Who Can Enter?
The competition is open to students learning Chinese in South Australian public, independent and Catholic schools, as well as officially registered community language schools. Students may enter individually or as part of a group, subject to the rules published for the relevant year.
What Can Students Create?
Unless a particular annual theme or signature phrase is announced, students may choose their own topic and creative style. Possible formats include:
short dramas, role-plays, comedies or interviews
speeches, poetry recitations or documentary-style presentations
music videos, songs, dance or performance pieces (Please ensure the video meets the originality requirements.)
cooking, cultural demonstrations or visual-art projects
animation, stop-motion, claymation or other digital storytelling formats
Whatever format is chosen, the video should include meaningful Chinese dialogue or narration spoken by the participating students and should clearly demonstrate their ability to use and apply the language.
Originality and Student Ownership
Entries must be original works created for the competition and must not be reused or adapted from another competition.
The concept, Chinese language, performance and production should genuinely reflect the participating students’ abilities and contribution.
Students should be actively involved in planning, script writing, Chinese narration or dialogue, performance and recording.
Reception to Year 2 students may receive reasonable assistance with filming, editing and limited script development.
From Year 3 onwards, students are expected to take primary responsibility for the creative concept, Chinese language content and video production.Entries must be primarily created by students.
The competition is designed to celebrate student learning and achievement, not the language or technical skills of adults supporting the entry.
Video Requirements
Chinese language: The video should include Chinese dialogue or narration spoken by the participating students.
Opening title page: Include the video title, school name, competition category, year-level group and names of participating students.
File format: MP4 or MOV, with clear picture and sound quality.
Audience suitability: Content must be appropriate for all ages and must not include explicit, offensive or unsuitable material.
Original production: The submitted video should be an original student work and meet the annual judging criteria.
Individual and Group Entries
Students may enter individually or work collaboratively.
Entries should normally consist of students from the same language category and year-level group.
Where students from different language categories collaborate, the entry is classified in the highest language-proficiency category represented.
Where students from different year levels collaborate, the entry is placed in the oldest year-level group represented.
A student should not be entered twice through both a mainstream school and a community school.
Community school entries compete within the arrangements set for community schools in that year.
Every listed participant should make a meaningful contribution to the production.
Registration, Uploading and Submission
Teachers are encouraged to coordinate and register entries from their school. Where collective school registration is not practical, students or parents may register directly, with a parent or guardian completing the form for a minor.
Upload the video to Google Drive, OneDrive, a private or unlisted YouTube link, or another secure online platform.
The shared link must allow the CLTASA Committee to view and download the video.
Submit the registration form and video link by the published deadline.
Late entries may not be considered.
Awards and Recognition
Gold, Silver and Bronze recognition may be determined by judging-score thresholds rather than by a fixed number of recipients.
If several entries meet the required standard, more than one entry may receive the same award level.
If no entry reaches the required threshold, an award level may not be presented in that group.
