ABOUT THE CHALLENGE

The South Australian Chinese Spelling & Literacy Challenge is a statewide academic competition designed to celebrate excellence in Chinese language learning.

This inaugural event aims to:

  • Promote Chinese literacy and accurate character writing

  • Encourage vocabulary development and language precision

  • Inspire students to deepen their understanding of Chinese language and culture

  • Recognise outstanding student achievement across South Australia

2. DATE 

    Friday, 6 November 2026 (Week 4 Term 4)

3. REGISTRATION

    Register via TryBooking https://www.trybooking.com/DJXCK

    Make sure to register by Friday, 16 October 2026 (Week 1 Term 4)

4. PRIZES

     Certificates and prizes will be awarded to the top individuals in each year level and each language group.

5. GROUPS & CATEGORIES

The competition is open to students across South Australia in the following categories:

  • Primary Division: Years 3–6

  • Middle Years Division: Years 7–9

  • Senior Division: Years 10–12

Students may compete in one of the following language background categories:

  • Second-language learners

  • Background-language learners

  • First-language learners

(Competition groupings will be adjusted to ensure fairness.)

 

6. AWARDS & RECOGNITION ​

Awards will be presented in each division:

  • Gold Award

  • Silver Award

  • Bronze Award

  • Overall Champion (each division)

  • Best Performing School Award

 

7. COMPETITION FORMAT

Round 1 – School or Online Preliminary Round

  • Written spelling and literacy assessment

  • Conducted at participating schools or online

  • Top students advance to the State Final

 

Round 2 – State Final (Live Event)

  • Live spelling challenge

  • Literacy tasks including word recognition and contextual usage

  • Grand Final round for top scorers

 

8. COMPETITION CONTENT

The challenge may include:

  • Listening and writing Chinese characters

  • Pinyin-to-character conversion

  • Word meaning recognition

  • Character formation accuracy

  • Short literacy comprehension tasks

Recommended vocabulary ranges will align with the Australian Curriculum guidelines.
